COLLAGE ON VIEW
Carrie Ann Baade: Birthplace: Remembering Louisiana’s Forgotten Women
at LeMieux Galleries in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA
4 January-15 February 2025
“Birthplace” is Carrie Ann Baade’s first solo exhibition at LeMieux Galleries. Baade traced her ancestral connections to Louisiana and New Orleans as far back as 1690. Her lineage revealed stories of resilience, especially among women whose contributions are often overlooked. In this exhibition, Baade explores the history of the American South via intimate narratives of identity and her own heritage rooted in colonial Louisiana. As she reimagines these narratives, the focus shifts from the women at the crossroads of cultural intersections, to colonial upheaval. Using a blend of collage and painting, each piece reflects evolving identities and the truth that all cultures are collages, continually blending and reshaping origins within the complex landscape of the American South.

Carrie Ann Baade was born in New Orleans, but spent most of her childhood in a small town in Colorado. After receiving her MFA from the University of Delaware, her style matured into one deeply affected by art history, contrasting contemporary and classical symbolism, and exploring the relationships of history, time, and mortality. Baade lives and works in Tallahassee, Florida, where she works as a distinguished professor in the Department of Art at Florida State University.
