COLLAGE ON VIEW
Intersections
at The Mansion at Strathmore in North Bethesda, Maryland, USA
23 November 2024-11 January 2025
The “Intersections” series presents contrasting artists with distinct viewpoints intersecting in the Mansion Galleries. Visitors discover a counterbalance between the artists rather than a connection through theme, style, or technique. Rashad Ali Muhammad’s collages form new worlds from recognizable imagery and Jordann Wine’s meditational geometric work creates transformations by subtly merging colors. Both artists elevate humble silk flowers and reflective glitter through compelling artistic vision.

This is two solo exhibitions and how the works intersect and have dialogue with each other. In my portion “Invocation,” I explore African cultural and spiritual practices centered around masks and their role in invoking ancestral or divine spirits to benefit individuals and communities. The act of Invocation—calling upon a spirit or deity for help, inspiration, protection, or guidance, or even drawing a spiritual force into one’s body—serves as a universal metaphor for connecting with higher powers. This series reflects how such connections can provide strength and courage to navigate life’s challenges. The vibrant color palettes, inspired by the healing and empowering energies of crystals and gemstones, intertwine with figures wearing masks, evoking the act of channeling these restorative forces. Silk flower petals, reimagined as symbolic veils between spiritual and physical realms, form circular motifs that radiate energy and linear patterns that resemble shifting curtains, highlighting the dynamic interplay between these dimensions. Through this work, I invite viewers to explore their spiritual connections, embrace their inner energy, and find resilience and balance in their journey toward self-realization.
