Winter White

at Northern Daughters in Vergennes, Vermont, USA
4 December 2020-15 January 2021

“Winter White” features the work of seven Vermont artists, including collage artists Matthew Monk, Hannah Morris, and Erika Lawlor Smith. Other artists in the show are Julia Jensen, Hannah Sessions, Pamela Smith, and Susanne Strater.

“As curators we approached this exhibit from an aesthetic standpoint, with the muted colors of winter putting emphasis on composition and texture of work. And though this element remains compelling within the body of work that has come together through this prompt, there is a sentiment that is threaded through the work as well. Many of the artists referenced their approach to embracing winter, as Vermonters must, and what it has to offer. It is true that in order to enjoy the sometimes nine-month period when snow may fly, it is helpful to follow winter’s lead. To do as winter does,” said Sophie and Justine, owners of Northern Daughters.

The gallerists note that as a gallery supporting artists in pursuing their own direction it is rare to offer a group exhibit that asks artists to consider, not only a particular theme, but a specific color palette. When artists are working towards a show like “Winter White” with a specific prompt it is illuminating to their process of creating work in general.
