“Magazine Dream: The Picture Perfect Palette” by Michael Sjostedt
Space-age optimism. Backyard bliss. Wide smiles from coast to coast. Mid-century advertisers whet the American appetite for a leisure lifestyle, class climbing ambitions–and freedom.
They knew that selling the dream required Technicolor campaigns.
Michael Sjostedt’s latest work is influenced by the cool, confident colour schemes from his ‘50s and ‘60s magazine stash. This is his first “abstract” collection: no characters, no commentary, no story.
Sjostedt spotlights the positive palettes that helped sell the anything-is-possible story: Aquamarine, tangerine and fire engine red are the stars. Sjostedt’s hat tip to the Beats (they went shopping, too) is found in the sallow tones of mustard and olive. Black and white accents give the pieces a mod pop.
Michael Sjostedt lives and works in Central Massachusetts. He is a PR/social media manager for an independent publisher, a best-selling author, and an interior designer. In his spare time, he makes collages and coordinates LOOP, a pop-up art market for upcycling artists and crafters.
