Johannes Boekhoudt’s Artist Portfolio
Johannes Boekhoudt was born in Willemstad, Curaçao in the Netherlands Antilles and moved to Costa Rica as a child. After a career as a pilot, he took up art in 2005 and has maintained a steady practice. His aesthetic draws from European Modernism and Latin American influences. His early work in collage gave way to a focus on painting, but during the COVID-19 pandemic, he revisited collage. A portfolio of Boekhoudt’s work appears in Kolaj 34.

The artist builds the abstract scene with cross strokes of increasing color and density that culminate in a flurry of kineticism.

Johannes Boekhoudt was born in Curaçao and emigrated to Costa Rica when he was a child. Before beginning his art career, he worked as a commercial airline pilot, briefly, as an air ambulance pilot, and also certified as an intra-aortic balloon technician. His career as an expressionist artist began shortly after the 9/11 attacks. Boekhoudt has shown his work extensively in solo and group shows in the U.S., across Latin America and the Caribbean. His work is held in numerous private and public collections, including the African American Museum of Dallas, the Museum of Biblical Art in Dallas, the Museo Nacional de Arte Moderna Carlos Mérida in Guatemala City, the Museo de Arte del Salvador in San Salvador, the Museo de Arte Moderno in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and the Museo Dr. Rafael Ángel Calderón Guardia in San Jose, Costa Rica.
