Luis Martin’s Collage Dream Collage Kits

A self-described “art engineer”, California-born, New York City-based collage artist Luis Martin was looking for a way to “create community around collage and curiosity.” His idea was to create and market Collage Dream Collage Kits. Each month he sends subscribers a package of material they can use to make a collage. A profile of his project appears in Kolaj 34.

Art was something that came to me like a life raft. All of my teachers in grade school encouraged me to develop my art abilities to compensate for my dyslexia, gayness, and complicated family dynamic. Collage was a gift from my grandmother. She used to bring European magazines from the posh convalescent home where she worked as a janitor. She would clip pages from the magazines and tape them around the house, especially next to the bathroom mirror. She would emulate the looks and styles in the magazines and even had a collection of men she thought were “sexy”. This gave me the freedom to follow suit.
