Using Collage to Teach Graphic Design

In Kolaj #14, Nancy Bernardo writes about how she uses collage to teach graphic design.

“Collage is my way to work on form and composition, and can be a process undertaken before a final piece, or a process leading to a final piece, or can sometimes end up as the final piece,” writes Bernardo. “Collage gives me the freedom to push images around the page, reposition them at various angles, replace images with larger or smaller ones – all manipulations that result in making many different themes and connections.”

“Mostly I wanted the students to get off the computer. I wanted them to use their hands to think more about the placement of elements. I wanted them to move and remove an element multiple times to see what could create the most dynamic and interesting composition.”
