A collage collaborative project by Leo & Pipo

For the past five years, street artists Leo & Pipo have been inviting collage artists to make imaginary portraits of the pair. Artists are asked to create a collage using an old photograph that features two characters. “Collage is a way of expression we always loved,” they told Toombes.com in 2016. “We felt inspired and close to the work of artists that we contacted. We were also very curious to see the perception of these artists vis-à-vis our universe. We feel our project Leo & Pipo as an open structure.” To date, over 250 artists have participated. The body of work is a powerful, collaborative collage project, tightly centred around a concept that allows for the stylistic, creative approach of individual artists to shine through. A profile of the dynamic duo appears in Kolaj #19

Leo & Pipo are French street artists who grew up in the Eastern suburbs of Paris. They mounted their first “decorative” project in 2008 after being “struck by the deep boredom and lack of human warmth” in the austere “city-museum” of Paris. In Summer 2017, Leo & Pipo will head to Sassetot-le-Mauconduit in Northern France where they will paste fifteen of their posters around the town using one part photographic archives from the local library and an image from a townsperson.
