Jamie Newton: “Mapping Recent Travel” (assemblage/sculpture)

A few years ago, Jamie Newton made a series of collage with pink paint that were a near perfect example of how the two mediums can play so well together. “Mapping Recent Travel” is a collection of assemblage/sculpture at Gallery 6 PDX in Portland, Oregon. “The pieces are intended as mapping and/or scores–plotted trajectories, recorded traverses, defined areas of sound–but also read as abstractions in their own right, balancing weight, form and colour,” said Gallery 6 PDX’s Liz Cohn. “Found and constructed pieces within the whole mirror journeys usually started with intent and then frequently modified by happenstance, the composition of which is often recognized or understood after the fact.”
