“Ripped scraps of reds and blues radiate from a burst of red-orange stripes. Images like doorframes, branches, skylines, birds, taxis, and building facades nest around the brightly striped crescents torn from hot air balloons, offering a bullseye and linear structure to what would otherwise be a cacophony of images. Along the bottom edge, small cutout letters spell “dada,” both the collage and art movement exploiting the accidental and incongruous,” writes Micaela Marini Higgs in Kolaj #21. Higgs profiles Houston, Texas artist Shawn Miller.

Miller’s My Messy Desk appears on the cover of Kolaj #21. For the first time in the magazine’s history, the cover does not feature an actual collage. My Messy Desk is a photograph of Shawn Miller’s workspace.

Using erasers to fade pictures and torn edges to blur carefully cut pieces, Miller is more interested in the feeling and process of making a collage than cautiously trying to preserve his source material or share a particular message.
