Virginia Fleck

AUSTIN, TEXAS, USA

Virginia Fleck uses the framework of the Mandala, a geometric object typically used for meditation that reflects on the universe using Hindu and Buddhist symbolism, to explore contemporary consumerist society. She is represented by Holly Johnson Gallery in Dallas, Texas, USA, and Galerie Dessers Hasselt in Hasselt, Belgium.

Virginia Fleck’s portfolio appears in Issue Two where Ariane Fairlie writes,

The Mandala is meant to apply meaningfulness and guidance on a search for enlightenment, bringing to question where our own society has led us on this journey. [Fleck] does this by replacing the traditional Hindu and Buddhist symbolism with logos and slogans, as well as more modern patterns. The bright colours and graphic presentation provide a reassuring platform for discourse, while closer examination of the exploited symbolism of the Mandala forces us to confront our notions of self within our societal context.
