Spotlight on Collage Trading Card Artist SeanFuckingGammon

SeanFuckingGammon loves scissors, glue sticks, old books and magazines, junk mail, and his really sharp fucking knife. He is deeply influenced by music and movies, usually punk rock and horror movies. He frequently turns his collages into stickers and sends them to shows all over the world. He said, “I dwell on things like the nature of celebrity, the future of humanity, why we’re here, etc.” His collage, A Couple More Minutes and It’s Time for Bed, is featured in Collage Artist Trading Cards Pack 7.

Packs of Collage Artist Trading Cards are a tool for discovering contemporary, fine art collage. Each card is a full colour, 5.5” x 3.5” postcard with rounded corners. An example of an artist’s work is on the front of the card and the artist’s public contact information is on the back.

So what’s your story; how do you describe yourself?

I am SeanFuckingGammon. I am a collage, street, sticker, digital artist from Windsor, Ontario. I made my first collage approximately 18 years ago. At the time, I didn’t even know that what I had made was called a collage. For many years I wanted to be a writer, and a film maker, and then a painter, finally focusing on collage about 7 years ago. I’m married to a lovely woman. I work at a casino. I love punk rock and horror movies.

What is the idea behind, A Couple More Minutes and It’s Time for Bed?

There’s a couple reasons. Obviously, Bruce Jenner is right in the middle. At the time I made it, he was being called a hero in the media for his transformation into Caitlyn. I’m all for transsexual rights, but I don’t really feel that Caitlyn is a hero for coming out. To me, a hero is someone that runs into a burning building to save a child, not some privileged former athlete reality TV show star. So this collage is about whom we choose to celebrate and our “15 minutes of fame”. It’s also about us as a species. Sometimes I wonder if I will see the end of our species in my lifetime. When I think about the pollution and destruction we’ve done to our planet and the frequently pathetic and deplorable way we treat each other, I think it’s a very real possibility that some idiot will pull the trigger or push the button and life as we know it will cease to exist.

How did you make it?

My Dad gave me a big frame he no longer wanted. It was a nice frame and I felt I should fill it. My collage is made from old books and magazines obtained from wherever I can get them. I use scissors, a sharp knife, glue sticks, and paper towels to make my collages. Sometimes I pile heavy things on them to smoosh ’em down and prevent curling.

What are you working on these days?

These days, I’m still working on collage as often as possible. I had to move this summer, so I took a couple of months off to focus on packing up all my horror movies and punk rock CDs. But I have a lot more room now and was able to complete a new collage just last week. As I type this, I’m on vacation from work. I still have a couple more days to go. I might have time to finish another one. Maybe two. Who knows? When I’m not working on collage, I’m making stickers and sticking them up all over the place, but that’s a different story….
