Collage: a Trio of Medleys

at Art Center of Corpus Christi, Kucera Gallery in Corpus Christi, Texas, USA
7 December 2019-4 January 2020

The show showcases analog collages by three local artists; Phyllis Finley, Vasu Mistry Berger, and Kelly Schaub. It provides an informative stroll through three distinct voices in the medium of collage.

Vasu Mistry Berger’s art employs applied imagery to punctuate her paintings with contemporary sophistication. Her deliberately restrained use of collage elevates mystical imagery to savant visuals.

Kelly Schaub merges diverse layers with rich tinted glazes resulting in luscious grounds which she peppers with exquisitely placed painted shapes and scribbled marks. The result is a bold and velvety body of predominantly abstract work.

In contrast, Phyllis Finley’s fully constructive style uses painted assets sparingly. She imbues the delicately composed narratives with wistful moods. The perfectly balanced compositions cue up a sense of intrigue and hint at historical origins.

Together these artists demonstrate how contemporary collage has developed both visual and conceptual depth since its appearance as a medium over 100 year ago.
