Rob Hitzig: Planting Confusion, Sowing Doubt

at the Vermont Supreme Court Gallery in Montpelier, Vermont, USA
9 January-27 March 2026

Rob Hitzig writes, “I started thinking about this new series after going to the NYC Armory Show in February 2020. I saw a couple of artists using OSB plywood, and I fell in love with its texture. I also loved the idea of transforming a construction-grade material into fine art. After struggling with my analog tools to create what I envisioned, I set the project aside until I found someone with a CNC router who could cut my designs exactly as I wanted. This show is the result of my five-year journey contemplating what to create with this beautiful and overlooked material.”

“I love to create intuitively constructed random shapes, amorphic or geometric, because they are a way for me to represent the nature of beings. It seems our forms aren’t an accurate depiction of who we really are. I feel that the more realistic an image, the less accurate it becomes. Using random shapes helps me to share my sense that living things are ever-changing and ineffable. It helps me to capture a split-second essence of a being while also suggesting its potential to be something completely different in the very next instant.”
