Etty Yaniv’s installation is informed by the vitrine’s distinct architectural characteristics, history, and its location in Dumbo near the East River. Marked by a spectacular golden frame from a by-gone era of industrial splendor, 1 Main Street is an iconic building constructed in 1914 by the maverick businessman and inventor Robert Gair, who invented machines to fold and manipulate paper for packaging goods. Yaniv’s installation coalesces thousands of fragments into an urban landscape, plastic and paper from shipping and packaging, scraps of architectural prints and drawings, altogether it becomes monumental yet fragile, reflecting on the delicate balance between water and land.
