Joe Rudko: Scrapbook

at PDX Contemporary Art in Portland, Oregon, USA
1 February-2 March 2024

Joe Rudko writes about this work:

Over the last decade, I’ve dissected found photography to create drawings, collages, and sculptures. As I’ve worked, piles of scraps have accumulated from thousands of different images—some found at shops, purchased on eBay, or received from friends and family.

Each of these works follow a framework and logic built on chance, intuition, and resourcefulness. Bits of images come together to form networks of color, mind maps, and scattered memories. Though technically assembled from photographs, they draw inspiration from textiles, mosaics, painting, and Bauhaus artists like Anni and Josef Albers, László Moholy-Nagy, and Paul Klee, whose work attempted to merge mediums into one unified approach.

Working in a physical, organic, and spontaneous manner mirrors my own chaotic image consumption. My mind constantly shifts between screens, online platforms, books, and the real world, leaving me lost in a sea of information. How many pictures do I come across in a single day? How many do I remember?
