Selections from the
Kolaj Magazine Artist Directory

Kolaj Magazine‘s Artist Directory is a tool for organizing and cataloguing artists who work in the medium of collage. Its audience includes the general public as well as independent curators, art venues, and writers. The editorial staff of Kolaj Magazine uses the Artist Directory to select artists to feature in the publication and to select artists for various curatorial projects. The Artist Directory exists as a public resource for those interested in collage as a medium and is designed to put interested parties in direct contact with artists. Our hope is that you will use the Artist Directory to discover new collage artists, collaborative partners, and art to exhibit. ENJOY!

Film photographs embody the aesthetic of memories and dreams, as they are both products of the mind. I’m a bit obsessed with this aesthetic so most of my life I’ve been documenting my environments and subjects in film photography, and almost all of my work and process is based on this. I have a desire to create something greater or show something more esoteric than I feel I could with a single photograph, so I’m compelled to make new compositions from the images I shoot. The physical nature of film is my medium of choice because it’s tactile and manipulating it with my hands satisfies some primal need in my artistic process. MORE

My collages are a collaboration with my unconscious, in which I artistically adventure into the infinity of my psyche. Applying an instinctive, “automatic” process of selecting and arranging, my subconscious mind discovers new relationships by juxtaposing what does not usually go together. The infinite possibilities of the process suit my inner world, while liberating my experience from the boundaries of rationalism. My traditional, analog approach as I hand-make collages, in conjunction with using vintage imagery, lets me understand myself as but a construct of my past experiences in a reality defined by a collective unconscious. Caterina Rossato
Bassano del Grappa, Italy

My collages arise from the need to sublimate, in a single image, a period of time or a geographical space that can not be captured with a single shot or a single point of view: a sentimental relationship, a trip, a day, all the landscapes I’ve seen, all the photos I’ve taken and even the ones I’ve lost and I can find elsewhere. Borders and points of view become one single unit that has no space-time connection to reality: which stands in front of us actually lies behind, what looks downstream is up, frontal views are complemented with side and aerial panoramas. There is no longer any distance, everything is here and now, always possible. MORE

Elise Wehle
Orem, Utah, USA

My artwork revolves around the time-intensive act of cutting intricate patterns using an utility knife. Moving my hands in the repetitive movements required by my work transforms my art practice into a meditative experience essential to my process. The themes of my art are centered on my attempts to connect my physical surroundings with the rich, complicated, internal and spiritual environments experienced within. The cut-out pattern interferes with the representational imagery, obstructing the seen with the unseen. No matter how many paper layers intersect with the photograph or drawing, the cut outs ultimately act as negative space, forming lines and shapes out of nothing. Despite the patterns’ clearly defined edges, they are actually invisible, like the experiences they represent. MORE

Corinne Henn
Belmar, New Jersey, USA

All of my work begins with a variety of vintage magazines and books. I use a scalpel and pair of scissors to cut each piece until I’m able to place them together in a way that fits whatever my mood might be on that particular day. Much of my work reflects the state of the world and how I perceive it. Sometimes my work is hopeful, sometimes my work is devastating. MORE

Sharmon Davidson
Taylor Mill, Kentucky, USA

My earliest memories are of a preoccupation with careful examination of the world around me, and with making marks on paper to represent what I saw. From this developed a passion for learning, a deep affinity with nature, and a desire to communicate through line and colour what cannot be expressed in words. My work originates from a deep belief in the sanctity of the earth, and in the underlying unity of everything in our universe. Formed from common elements born from a common source, everything is interconnected in the most intricate ways, both visible and invisible. MORE
