#WORLDCOLLAGEDAY

Basel, Switzerland

Collage Workshop at Les Coquelicots. Celebrate World Collage Day with an inspiring morning of collage making in Basel! A collage workshop with the Brazilian artist Ana Paula Barros (www.instagram.com/apbstudio) at the new venue of Les Coquelicots school. A Single Image Catches My Eye

Sydney, New South Wales artist Harriet Moutsopoulos writes, “I am drawn to the surreal and unsettling and try to inject that into my work where possible, always seeking out the unexpected connections between humour and tragedy.” A portfolio of her work appears in Kolaj 25. MORE

SPECIAL EDITION

What Happens Next

From the World Collage Day Special Edition Editorial by Ric Kasini Kadour: "A lack of know-how is not our problem today. Our problems are an unwillingness to make the solutions to problems available to everyone. Humanity’s biggest challenge is how we get along with eight billion other people. That is not a crisis of the mind, that is a crisis of the heart." MORE

The Scrambled Papers Theory

Konstantine Patsios at Alma Contemporary Art Gallery in Athens, Greece through 4 May 2019. If the unconscious is structured as a language, the juxtaposition of the artist's "Scrambled Papers" structures a new communication code. The double meaning of the title is also a word game, an indirect reference to the Egg, as the conflation of the material in art with the flavour, and as the archetype of creation and birth. "My artistic work has to do with the creation of another body," the artist says. MORE

The Catharsis of Collage

Ben Dinino recalls how he found peace when he collaged his grandfather’s paint-by-number paintings. He writes "One stressful day, I was feeling stuck on a few book art pieces that I had been working on. I saw the paint-by-numbers and without much thought I grabbed a utility knife and started hacking away." MORE

Indefinity

Linda Jane James at Aberystwyth Arts Centre in Aberystwyth, Wales through 6 May 2019. Indefinity is a work developed over the last year by James that expresses her feelings about the overwhelming accumulation of materials and waste and the endless, complex and layered consequences of the human need to be productive, to grow and expand. #WORLDCOLLAGEDAY

Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Gallery Visit at Frank Juarez Gallery. Part of our gallery's mission is to educate the community about the works that we exhibit, promote, and create. Collage is an area that we are interested in and often times a bit difficult for others to understand due to the complexity of design, creative process, risks, and execution of such works. We would like to contribute to the world of collage to give the public a great appreciation of what goes into a work of art either through creation, discussion, and critiques. On World Collage Day, the gallery welcomes the public to an Open Studio of sorts where artists will work on collages, collaborate and network. MORE

Kolaj Magazine exists to show how the world of collage is rich, layered, and thick with complexity. By remixing history and culture, collage artists forge new thinking. To understand collage is to reshape one’s thinking of art history and redefine the canon of visual culture that informs the present. Here is a preview of some of the articles in the current issue of the print magazine.
