Curating Collage Workshop
Deadline: 11 October 2020. A four week, virtual/online workshop with the University of Vermont’s Fleming Museum of Art. The Curating Collage Workshop is a four-week program designed to train artists as curators. In six virtual meetings over four weeks and through ongoing, online discussion, we will explore the fundamentals of curating, how to create critical context for collage, and various strategies for presenting collage to an audience. Topics will include art writing; gallery and museum issues; documenting artist practice; and working with art professionals. DETAILS

Birmingham Collage Collective in the United Kingdom
The Birmingham Collage Collective was founded in early 2019 by Adam Wynn. After connecting with several Birmingham-based collage artists in various ways, it became evident that there is a strong connection to the medium throughout the city. The group has since expanded to 28 members and in just under a year has had two exhibitions and one zine release. MORE

El Club de Collage in Quito, Ecuador
The group was founded in 2017 after finding around 30 old fashioned magazines called “Vanidades”. They invited some friends to use them for collage and never stopped. El Club de Collage’s main goal is to provide a quick and fun outlet for the creative energy shared among the members. MORE

Free Collage Artists Club in Saint Petersburg, Russia
The Free Collage Artists Club was founded in 2018 by artists Irina Mashina, Zoya Gutnik, and Nina Freiman. They started making collages together and soon decided to organize open meetings, master classes, and workshops. Their goal is to make art and try new ways to express their ideas while sharing it with everybody who is interested in collage. MORE

Sociedade Portuguesa de Colagem in Portugal
Founded by Lia Rodrigues after noticing a lack of a collage community in Portugal that she saw present in many other countries. Rodrigues says “I think it’s a part of humans and artists to want to feel connected in a group. Not only to connect with others who do the same kind of art, but also other kinds of artists and art fans in general.” MORE

Kolaj LIVE Online is a series of virtual programs in the form of forums, panels, workshops, artist talks, studio visits, and other activities that allow people to come together, learn and talk about collage, and connect in real time to the collage community. Events are free and open to everybody.

Women in Collage: An International Round Table of Artists

Join 516 ARTS and Kolaj Institute for a Women in Collage Round Table. Dafna Steinberg will lead a discussion about the role of women in collage as artists and subjects. The panel will discuss collage and individual practices as they relate to the artists’ femininity with Lory Ivey Alexander (Washington, DC), Ainize Txopitea (Guipuzcoa, Spain), Lisa Wicka (Green Bay, Wisconsin), and Marie-Pier Lopes (aka ZEPOL, Montreal, Quebec). The formal conversations will be followed by a free-form hangout where women, femme and non-binary artists working in collage are invited to share their experiences and discuss the themes raised by the speakers. Navigating Digital and Analog Worlds: Collage and Printmaking

David Wischer and Lisa Wicka, who each use digital and analog collage in their work, will have a conversation about their process, concepts, and strategies in printmaking and how manipulating existing imagery helps connect them with the ever-changing world around them. They will speak about how printmakers are constantly working with the repeatable image and how printmaking and collage are natural partners. Radical Reimaginings
The curators of the 96-page book invited artists who use collage in their practice to put forward a work of art that offers a visual narrative that speaks to the unprecedented change unfolding in 2020. An essay by Ric Kasini Kadour reflects upon collage's unique ability to imagine new realities. Forty artists from nine countries and multiple Indigenous peoples—Salish-Kootenai/Métis-Cree/Sho-Ban, Tlingit/Nisga’a, Oglala/Lakota, and Seneca Nation—offer a variety of perspectives. The voices of Black, Latinx, Native, and white Americans mingle with those from Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Argentina, Canada, France, and Germany. Artwork is accompanied by a statement in which the artists describe how they want to reimagine the world. MORE

Kolaj LIVE Online Program Book
The Kolaj LIVE Online Program Book is your guide to the event. The 62-page book includes in-depth descriptions of the fourteen Kolaj LIVE Online events along with biographies of the presenters and institutional partners. The book serves as the catalog for the Kolaj Institute Fundraising Exhibition. It also comes with four starter collages to participate in the Collage Castell activity, a cat-themed Cut Out Page for the Cat & Paste Workshop, and a commentary about the creation of the event. MORE
Each issue of Kolaj Magazine is dedicated to reviewing and surveying contemporary collage with an international perspective. We are interested in collage as a medium, a genre, a community, and a 21st century art movement.
