Margaret Glew: “Torn & Painted Collages”

When an artist creates work outside of their usual scale, medium or materials, the possibilities abound for new insights and expansion. In her first show in Portland at Gallery 6 PDX, Toronto artist Margaret Glew reaches outside of her comfort zone of large, swirling, colour-loaded canvases to dive into the challenges of smaller works on paper–painted boldly and hand torn.

Glew says, “Different materials equals different process: somehow that process (tearing paper, moving it around, etc.) causes me to see relationships, colours, shapes, in a new way. The perception of what is possible changes. The process feels different too; it’s interesting how much the materials alter my perceptions.”
