Collage at the 2013 New York Art Fairs

Euro Punk by Pablo Echaurren

Kolaj contributor Paul Bright visited the famous Armory Show and VOLTA NY, both of which ran 7-10 March 2013, to see the collage on offer.

In Issue Four, Bright gives his impressions on the wide range of collage and assemblage presented from artists and galleries both in New York and from as far afield as Vienna and Lima, Peru.

Setting aside all the other approaches to art-making that utilize collage conceptually or borrow from it formally (some painting, lots of digital and video work, installation, and so forth), I am confining myself mostly to what I thought were the more noteworthy “material” examples of collage, where disparate materials were adhered in physical layers to another material or to a ground.
