Elise Margolis’ Artist Portfolio

Elise Margolis was born in Brooklyn and lives and works in Manhattan. She writes, “I cut my paintings, looking further for the images within the abstraction to be revealed. By juxtaposing the assorted pieces of paintings, I look to create a new dialogue. The placement between texture, colour and form each has a purpose and is used alongside the movement of line and brush stroke to create a balance for a larger more poignant conversation.” A portfolio of Margolis’ work appears in Kolaj #21.

Kolaj Magazine features portfolios of contemporary artists in each issue alongside critical commentary as a means of developing a deeper understanding of collage as both a medium and a genre.

Using bold gestural strokes or creating an oasis of colour to immerse myself in is a way that I express my thoughts.

Margolis studied painting and drawing at the Art Students League with Hananiah Harari and Gustav Rehberger, among others. Her paintings were featured on the television show Friends and are in many private collections. Recently, Margolis changed her focus from painting to collage and became a member of the Brooklyn Collage Collective. Learn more at www.elisemargolis.com.
