Jay Riggio challenges material notions of collage with a new body of work that places paper and paint in layered resin on wood panels. The artist assembles the fragments using resin and places the composition on a shaped wood panel. “I was making works on paper for years. But in the last few, I began experimenting with resin and using paper and paint between layers of resin,” writes Riggio. “The work has a lot more depth and dimension that’s created through the cast shadows within the resin layers. The type of work I do now feels more like sculpture with the incorporation of shaped wood and separate assemblage appendages that I have incorporated into each piece.”
