Sabine Remy’s Collaborative Artist Book Project

with the Iconic Titles of Insel-Bücherei

Since 1912, Insel Verlag has published the inexpensive book series, Insel-Bücherei. The beautiful books are iconic in German culture. The covers have colorful, wallpaper-like graphics with a simple square box that announces the title and possibly the author. You can recognize Insel-Bücherei by the cover, even though each cover is unique.

Sabine Remy takes old and damaged Insel-Bücherei titles and gives them new life in a collaborative artist book project she calls Die ungleichen Zwillinge or The Unequal Twins. She started the project in October 2018 and, to date, has worked with Geronimo Finn, Allan Bealy, Axelle Kieffer, Frank Voigt, Vizma Bruns, Zach Collins, Dawn Nelson Wardrope, Laurence Gillot, Peter Dowker, Waldemar Strempler, TicTac Patrizia, and others.

“Artist books in today’s sense have their roots in the late 20th century, in early avant-garde movements such as Dada, in this respect I try to take up and continue these roots,” said Remy.
